In the summertime in Florida, there are three certainties: it will be humid, there will be a hurricane somewhere in the state, and there will be mosquitoes. Everywhere, mosquitos. While most prove harmless and leave you scratching your skin for a day or two, there are other dangers to mosquitoes as they can carry diseases such as West Nile and encephalitis. But as seemingly innocuous as most mosquitoes are, Florida is in danger of being consumed by something more sinister.

This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guest Rosalind Peterson to discuss the Gallinipper mosquito. Approximately twenty times larger than a normal mosquito, the Gallinipper’s bite hurts and they have a taste for human blood – like a six-legged flying vampire.

Z-GALLINIPPER-4

Their name stems from the most likely apocryphal claim that if they nip you, they’ll get a gallon of your blood. While the image of a two inch long bug suddenly so swollen with blood that it weighs twelve pounds may seem humorous, these mosquitoes have been known to chase children and adults.

While the danger of the Gallinipper may seem real these descriptions, it is mostly harmless. Its bite hurts, but the bug only resides in low-lying areas prone to flooding – near a swamp or fields. These bugs also don’t carry human disease, so the only real concern is the animal’s painful bite should one land on you. However, due to its size, you will most likely notice it before it has a chance to bite.

The real danger, though, comes from the methods used to combat these flyingspraying - 3 menaces. For years, local governments in Florida and other areas would spray toxic pesticides in neighborhoods to prevent mosquitoes and other bugs from becoming a nuisance and spreading disease – ironically causing damage to some people’s nervous and other bodily systems. The question becomes at what point are returns on pest control diminishing when it comes to human health and safety?

One of the most common and pervasive myths in modern folklore is the claim that the mouths of dogs are “cleaner” than human mouths.  As much as we’d like to believe that the microbes living inside the mouth of man’s best friend are as harmless as he is, this apocryphal assertion can be chalked up to two things:  that we love seemingly unlikely factoids and that our mouths are cesspools of germs that require constant cleaning.  While this last part is a slight exaggeration, there is some truth to it – this is one of the reasons why we brush, floss and wash our mouths with green alcohol multiple times daily. But what if the instrument we use to clean our mouths carries just as many – or more – germs than the thing it is trying to clean?

HEALTH ALERT – DANGEROUS BACTERIA IN MOUTHGUARDS

This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy® welcomes guests Jim Stepp and Jenni Stepp to discuss their product, Bocca Pura, and the surprising uses it has in the not only the home, but also on the fields, courts, and rinks across the nation.

and a blend of essential oils – including clove, eucalyptus and peppermint – chosen for their disinfecting properties. Bocca Pura is alcohol free and 100% vegan. By spraying Bocca Pura just 1 or 2 times on the bristles of your toothbrush before applying toothpaste, you will sanitize your toothbrush and eliminate up to 99.9% of germs that accumulate on your bristles.
