“I am one with the Force, and the Force is with me.”

Though he is perhaps most famous to western audiences as Chirrut Îmwe, a Rebel spy in Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Donnie Yen has had a long and prosperous career in cinema, spanning more than three decades. This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy and guest Veronica Hendricks will discuss Yen’s career, his use of varied martial arts styles, and what lies in Yen’s future.

Born in Guangzhou, China in 1963, Donnie Yen is the son of a kung fu master and a newspaper editor. When he was eleven, his family moved to Boston. Here he learned a great love of music as well as learning martial arts from his mother, a pioneer for Chinese martial arts in America. In time, he became a serious practitioner of modern Wu Shu, and his parents decided to send him to Beijing to train at the Chinese capital’s famed Wu Shu academy. It was when Yen returned to Hong Kong en route back to Boston that he met the famed martial arts movie director Yuen Woo-ping.

Donnie Yen exploded onto the Hong Kong movie scene when he was cast in the lead role of director Yuen Woo-ping’s Drunken Tai Chi. His debut film immediately established him as a viable leading man, and Yen has remained a major figure in Chinese action cinema to this day.

Yen’s career blossomed, including roles in over 70 movies and tv shows, including 1993’s Iron Monkey, Yimou Zhang’s 2002 masterpiece Hero, and the Ip Man series, of which a 4th movie is filming right now. He has also been in many American movies, such as the aforementioned Rogue One, Blade II, xXx: The Return of Xander Cage, and a live-action remake of Disney’s Mulan, scheduled for release in 2020, which will also star Jet Li.

HOUR 1 Audio – Dr. Hildy® and Dr. Kathleen I. Kimball – Chinese Year of the Fire Monkey

This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes to the first hour of the show returning guest Dr. Kathleen I. Kimball, Feng Shui geomancer, expert in world art, and better known as Dr. KIK, to discuss the year of the Fire Monkey and its impact on our lives!

As many know, the Chinese zodiac is divided into twelve signs that rotate year by year, as opposed to Western astrology, which rotates on a monthly basis. 2016 is the year of the Monkey, and this year in particular, the year of the Fire Monkey, which hasn’t happened since 1956.

Monkeys tend to be smart, clever and intelligent, especially in their career and wealth. They are lively, flexible, quick-witted and versatile. In addition, their gentleness and honesty bring them an everlasting love life. Although they were born with enviable skills, they still have several shortcomings, such as an impetuous temper and a tendency to look down upon others.

The Monkey governs the period of 3-5 pm, the late summer, and the West by Southwest direction. While the Monkey’s dominant element is metal, in the Chinese element cycle, fire melts metal, and the transformative environment re-shapes and re-forms. We may all transform this year, especially those who are Monkeys, Roosters, Dogs, and those born in a year ending in 0 or 1. So if you’re entering the middle part of your 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s, 60s, etc… prepare for change!

In the second hour of the show, Dr. Hildy will discuss something that is near and dear to her heart: Chinese cinema! Returning guest Veronica Hendricks will join Dr. Hildy to discuss Chinese actor Donnie Yen, who starred in 2014’s The Monkey King, as well as Hero, and the IP Man series, and American films such as Highlander: Endgame, Blade II, and the upcoming Star Wars spinoff, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, which will finally tell the story of the event in the Star Wars universe that started it all: the Rebel theft of the plans for the Death Star.

Chinese cinema has existed since the earliest days of motion pictures, with the first Chinese film, The Battle of Dingjunshan, made in 1905. In the first decades, the film industry was centered on Shanghai, but after the Japanese invasion of China, filmmakers moved to Hong Kong, returning to Shanghai after the war. During the Cultural Revolution, the film industry was severely restricted, coming almost to a standstill from 1967-72. The industry flourished following, and starting in the mid to late 1980s, the rise of the Fifth Generation brought increased popularity to Chinese cinema abroad, especially among Western arthouse audiences, with films like Red Sorghum, The Story of Qiu Ju, and Farewell My Concubine winning major international awards.

Join Dr. Hildy and her guests this week as they discuss the Year of the Fire Monkey and Chinese cinema on One Cell One Light Radio!
