One of the most amazing technological marvels of the last decade is the invention of the 3D printer. For decades, computer printing was limited to a flat, two-dimensional surface. The idea that you would be able to create virtually any item in your own home was a dream of the future straight out of Star Trek or The Jetsons. However, with the availability of increased scanning technology, and the ability to share specs via the internet, 3D printing is increasingly becoming commonplace, as the price of these machines decrease as more and more people embrace the technology. Three-dimensional printers are now being used to create tools, art, medical supplies, and even monsters.

This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes Justice Joseph, Art Director of  Ironklad Studios, a Los Angeles-based collective of creatives specializing in creating entire worlds for all formats of entertainment including features, games, advertising, cartoons, VFX and toys. Their team offers a diverse range of talents and skill sets, helping to form the building blocks of a project from initial concept to release date.

In the first hour hour of the show, Justice and Dr. Hildy will discuss Ironklad Studios and their role in creating worlds in entertainment. Ironklad has done work on such films as the iconic creature work for Goosebumps, the visual language and look development Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, and creature and look development for Disney’s Maleficent. As Art Director, Justice is directly responsible for the visual aspect of their work, and his conversation with Dr. Hildy will focus on Ironklad’s increased use of 3D printing as a tool to help them visualize work for their clients.

In the second hour of the show, Dr. Hildy and Justice will return for a discussion on the advancing role of 3D printing in the medical field.

HOUR 1 –

HOUR 2 –

In this time of technological miracles, we are constantly being amazed by new breakthroughs. Just 10 years ago, the idea of being able to access nearly any piece of information you ever wanted to know from nearly anywhere in the world from a device you held in your hand would have seemed like something out of science fiction. But now, billions of people do it on a daily basis. And even less time ago, the idea that we could produce nearly any object from scratch in our own homes seemed like pure fantasy. But that time is soon upon us.

This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guest Veronica Hendricks to discuss the newest technological marvel – three-dimensional printing. While 3D printers have existed for a short time, they are too cost-prohibitive to be commonplace in our homes. But with the right materials and a cost-effective printer, creating a screwdriver, a toy, or textiles could become as easy as downloading a template and hitting “Print.”

But what does this mean from a nanotechnology perspective? A team from the University of Toronto’s Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering and the IBM Canada Research and Development Center developed a method to spray solar cells onto nearly any shape. Imagine being able to cover your entire car in solar cells. Or your bicycle, or your home, or even your skin.

This application could be taken further, to include spray-on biosensors that could interact with your smartphone. This technology could make Apple’s Health app seem like a piece of pre-historic technology. Imagine being able to understand your body’s systems much like the computer does in your car – and to get a “warning light” when something is wrong. The implications to modern medicine could be enormous. But with any new technology, we have to be careful with how we wield it.

Join Dr. Hildy and her guest this week as they discuss 3D printing and its use of nanotech on One Cell One Light Radio!
