HOUR ONE:

This week’s episode of One Cell One Light Radio features a topic very near and dear to the hearts of many people (except those who are allergic): cats!

In the first hour of the show, Dr. Hildy welcomes guest Dr. Leslie A. Lyons, world famous cat geneticist, to discuss the feline genetics.

A professor at the University of Missouri, Dr. Lyons’ research focuses on the genetics of the domestic cat and the development of genetic tools and resources that assist gene mapping in the cat and other companion animals.

Among other topics, their conversation will  entail the study of coat colors  and disease.  In felines, these can go hand in hand as often a gene that controls something as simple as coat color in cats may have a slightly different mutation in humans and cause a devastating disease.

And of course, any discussion about cats wouldn’t be complete without discussing Cricket, Dr. Hildy’s own calico.

Join Dr. Hildy and her guest in the first hour as they discuss feline genetics on One Cell  One Light Radio!

This week’s episode of One Cell One Light Radio features a topic very near and dear to the hearts of many people (except those who are allergic): cats!

In the second hour of the show, Dr. Hildy welcomes a returning guest, film producer Veronica Hendricks, to discuss Dr. Hildy’s new book, Cricket the K-Town Kitty: A Tale of Who I AM.

Cricket is Dr. Hildy’s own calico cat. Born feral, Cricket was found and taken to Kitt Crusaders in Los Angeles, a cat rescue shelter. When Cricket was 5 months old, she was adopted by Dr. Hildy.

The book explores Cricket’s lineage – as all domestic cats are descendants of big cat breeds – as well as how cats have evolved over time.

Join Dr. Hildy and her guest this week as they discuss Cricket and Dr. Hildy’s newest book on One Cell One Light Radio!

UC DAVIS: Cat Coat Color – Feline Coat Color Tests – Introduction
The modern-day domestic cat displays a wide variety of coat colors and patterns. Classification of these can be confusing sometimes because different registries or associations may name the same phenotype differently. Below is a table of the coat color genes and DNA tests offered by the Veterinary Genetics Laboratory. http://www.vgl.ucdavis.edu/services/coatcolorcat.php
……
First some very basic genetics! The difference between chinchilla, shaded silver and silver tabby are due to the underlying tabby pattern (ticked, mackerel/spotted or classic). Tabby patterns are cause by genes at two different places. The agouti gene, A, allows the hairs to be banded with alternate light and dark bands. The recessive form, non-agouti “a”, means the hair is solid colour without lighter bands. In cats with the Agouti version (allele), the actual pattern is due to a different gene. There are three identified alleles of the tabby gene. Ticked tabby (Ta) is dominant. Mackerel (T) is dominant over blotched, but recessive to ticked. Classic/blotched (tb) is recessive.
