Tiny World of Nano – Updates and More

To compare life 100 years ago to that of today, one’s mind boggles at the technological advancements made in such a short period of time. Humans have lived on our planet for just a few thousand years, relatively speaking, and in such time lived relatively similar lives until the Renaissance era. After that period in our history, we still knew little in the way of science. However, in the last century of our existence we’ve really started to tap into what we’re capable of.

To think that 100 years ago, man had just barely achieved his dream of flight. And now, we fly at unthinkable speeds as if it was nothing. We can communicate with nearly anyone at any time on the planet. And we have access to almost any piece of information we could possibly have. With these advancements in technology has also come better medical practices and information. Now that we are in the digital age, we’re poised to take a huge step unlike any we’ve taken before.

This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy will have a special discussion with returning guest, Veronica Hendricks, on precision medicine, a medical model that proposes the customization of healthcare, with medical decisions, practices, and/or products being tailored to the individual patient.

18With the advancements in technology, we now have more ways than ever to quantify and study our own personal data. Just within the last year or so, we’ve seen the rise of wearable technology – devices such as the FitBit – that gather a remarkable amount of data about ourselves. How many steps have you taken today? What’s the range of your heart rate? How many calories are you burning on a normal day? This tech has made strides in the fields of athletics and weight loss. Soon it will be able to take this even further.

Just a few weeks ago, Otsuka Pharmaceuticals and Proteus Digital Health released a joint statement revealing the FDA accepted their new drug application for the first sensor-embedded version of Abilify for depression. This hybrid drug/device product uses an ingestible sensor built into the tablet working with another sensor embedded into a wearable adhesive patch to monitor a patient’s medication-taking patterns as well as their physiological responses like rest, body angle, and activity patterns. The collected information can be studied by patients and health care professionals to determine patterns in behavior and steps that can be taken as preventative measures.

This field of medicinal study is gaining traction at a rapid pace. In the September 4, 2015 issue of Science there was a position for Tenure Track or Tenured Professor for the NEW INITIATIVE in PRECISION MEDICINE.  The university that advertised this position has made an unprecedented commitment to advance human health by applying computational biology to analyze big data in biomedical research. This initiative in precision medicine seeks to transform medicine through advances in omic-scale diagnosis, therapy, engineering and computer science, imaging and data integration that enable insights into disease mechanism. It is this commitment to using technology to improve health care that gives us hope to discover how to better treat patients, cure diseases, and prevent problems before they happen.

Join Dr. Hildy this week as she discusses precision medicine on One Cell, One Light Radio!
