Returning Special Guest: ROSALIND PETERSON – http://AgricultureDefenseCoalition.org

HOUR 1 AUDIO:

HOUR 2 AUDIO:

~Rosalind Peterson~

~Rosalind Peterson~

In the summertime in Florida, there are three certainties: it will be humid, there will be a hurricane somewhere in the state, and there will be mosquitoes. Everywhere, mosquitos. While most prove harmless and leave you scratching your skin for a day or two, there are other dangers to mosquitoes as they can carry diseases such as West Nile and encephalitis. But as seemingly innocuous as most mosquitoes are, Florida is in danger of being consumed by something more sinister.

This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guest Rosalind Peterson to discuss the Gallinipper mosquito. Approximately twenty times larger than a normal mosquito, the Gallinipper’s bite hurts and they have a taste for human blood – like a six-legged flying vampire.

Z-GALLINIPPER-4

Their name stems from the most likely apocryphal claim that if they nip you, they’ll get a gallon of your blood. While the image of a two inch long bug suddenly so swollen with blood that it weighs twelve pounds may seem humorous, these mosquitoes have been known to chase children and adults.

While the danger of the Gallinipper may seem real these descriptions, it is mostly harmless. Its bite hurts, but the bug only resides in low-lying areas prone to flooding – near a swamp or fields. These bugs also don’t carry human disease, so the only real concern is the animal’s painful bite should one land on you. However, due to its size, you will most likely notice it before it has a chance to bite.

The real danger, though, comes from the methods used to combat these flyingspraying - 3 menaces. For years, local governments in Florida and other areas would spray toxic pesticides in neighborhoods to prevent mosquitoes and other bugs from becoming a nuisance and spreading disease – ironically causing damage to some people’s nervous and other bodily systems. The question becomes at what point are returns on pest control diminishing when it comes to human health and safety?

Furthermore, tiny mechanical robots are being invented – while seeming like pure science fiction – are a reality at Harvard University as we speak. These robots, similar to mosquitoes, could be used to retrieve DNA information from people and other uses not known to us at this time.

Join Dr. Hildy and her guest, Rosalind Peterson, this week as they discuss giant bugs, pesticides, designer-nano insects and robot mosquitoes and bees on One Cell One Light Radio!

“THE APPLICATION OF FLUORESCENT NANOCRYSTALS TO STUDY THE DISTRIBUTION OF NEUROPEPTIDES IN THE AEDES AEGYPTI MOSQUITO by Tatiana Rosa Cole
http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/bio_honors/46/ First Advisor, Dr.Fernando Noriega
Abstract
Semiconductor nanocrystals, also known as quantum dots (QDs), have been used in studies involving mice and human tissues, but never before in research on insects. We used QDs to study the distribution of two neuropeptides in the Aedes aegypti mosquito, the vector of both dengue and yellow fever. These neuropeptides play a significant role in the production of juvenile hormone, a hormone that controls biting behavior, metamorphosis, and reproduction throughout the life of the mosquito

Lawsuit seeks to address bee Colony Collapse Disorder and demands EPA protect livelihoods, rural economies and environment

EXCERPT: Independent scientists have assessed the effects of clothianidin and thiamethoxam on honey bee colony health and development, examining both sub-lethal exposure effects and acute risks. Scientists have also identified massive data gaps that prevent accurate assessments as to their continued safety, not just for honey bees but for ecosystem integrity on the whole. A major new report issued this week by the American Bird Conservancy, The Impact of the Nation’s Most Widely Used Insecticides on Birds, sounds dire warnings about EPA’s failures to assess threats to birds and to the aquatic ecosystems many species depend upon.

In March 2012, CFS and a coalition of prominent beekeepers, along with Pesticide Action Network and Beyond Pesticides filed an Emergency Petition with the EPA asking the agency to suspend the use of clothianidin. Yet, a year later, the agency has refused and indicated it will not finish its Registration Review for clothianidin and thiamethoxam, as well as other neonicotinoids, until 2018.
