Oftentimes, we don’t give a second thought to the safety of common chemical products we use in our household. Save for the very basic warning not to ingest them, we consider most household cleaners and other products safe to use in our homes. However, while these products may be safe in the short term, what are their long-term effects on our bodies?
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy™welcomes in the first hour Alexandra Scranton, Director of Science and Research of Women’s Voices of the Earth, a national organization that works to eliminate toxic chemicals that impact women’s health by changing consumer behaviors, corporate practices and government policies. Their discussion will include the work of WVE and about toxins found in our everyday life.
As the Director of Science and Research, Alex authors WVE’s scientific reports and provides scientific review for the organization’s programs. Prior to working at WVE, she worked in the epidemiology and statistics unit at the American Lung Association headquarters in New York. She currently sits on the Research Advisory Committee for the California Healthy Nail Salon Collaborative and on the Institutional Biosafety Committee for Rocky Mountain Laboratories (a National Institutes of Health facility). She has a Masters Degree in Environmental Studies from the University of Montana and a BA from Amherst College. Alexandra lives and works from Pullman, WA, with her husband and two beautiful daughters.
In the second hour, Dr. Hildy™ will hold her own Toxicology 101, using her expertise and vast knowledge of the subject to discuss common toxins that are often in the body and how to detoxify yourself from these.
Comprehensive Handbook Of Hazardous Materials – Chapter 3 – Toxicology, Hildegarde L.A. Sacarello (Staninger), (Dec 16, 1993)
Historically, industrial intoxications have been defined by substances or cause in terms of signs and symptoms. Many classical texts on occupational disease and industrial toxicology approach the discussion of etiology from the standpoint of specific agents.
Today, many of these agents are used in the home as every day household cleaners, soap powders, glass cleaner, silver polish and items to kill bugs or microorganisms. The increase in the number and complexity of substances are now being incorporated in house hold cleaners, fabrics, plastic wraps and diapers. These substances sometimes will spill over into the community environment as they are used more in the home.
The area of the health and safety aspect for a citizen to be aware of these toxic substances have been brought out through FEMA training that are free to the public. Many of us have had training in our workplaces to be able to understand and know the toxic effects of hazardous materials/toxic substances that are called carcinogens, irritants, mutagens, hepatotoxins, nephrotoxins and other categories that account for the systemic toxicological pathology etiology of these chemical substances effect upon the human body.
Join Dr. Hildy and her guest Alexandra Scranton as they discuss common toxins found in the home on One Cell One Light Radio!
