TOXIC BLACK MOLD

TOXIC BLACK MOLD

Common household maladies seem too frequent to quantify. We’ve learned that our appliances have turned against us, emitting toxic gasses that can slowly kill us if left unchecked. Additionally, lead, asbestos and other toxins have been found in common building materials. What other danger lurks in our homes? And outside. And is literally inescapable, because it’s found nearly everywhere on the planet?

This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy™ welcomes Dennis Hooper, MD,

PhD of Realtime Laboratories in Carrollton, Texas to discuss the toxic effects of molds and their mycotoxins.Mold is one of the most common fungi, that grow in the form of multicellular filaments called hyphae. A connected network of these hyphae has multiple, genetically identical nuclei and is considered a single organism, referred to as a colony, unlike yeasts that grow as a single cell. Mold is common in food spoilage as anyone who hasn’t checked on a loaf of bread for a week has learned.Molds produce a toxic chemical product called a mycotoxin. When fungi consumes organic matter in the right conditions (sufficient temperature and humidity), fungi proliferate into colonies and mycotoxin levels become high.

MYCOTOXINS

MYCOTOXINS

Since mycotoxins weaken their host, fungi may use it as a means as bettering the environment for their reproduction. Are fungi bent on world domination? Unlikely, as they don’t possess the power of rational thought, but if the conditions all over the planet were right, complete fungal infection of Earth is not as silly as it may sound. While mycotoxin effects vary, their effect on humans and animals include death, identifiable diseases or health problems, weakened immune systems, and allergens. Some, including penicillin, are even toxic to other fungi and bacteria. Mycotoxins can appear in the food chain as a result of fungal infection of crops, either by being eaten directly by humans or by being used as livestock feed. Mycotoxins greatly resist decomposition or being broken down in digestion, so they remain in the food chain in meat and dairy products. Even temperature treatments, such as cooking and freezing, do not destroy mycotoxins.Additionally, buildings are another source of potential mycotoxin proliferation. Because of the nature of HVAC units and recycled air being pushed through them, there are many cases of illness associated with indoor air quality problems. Not to mention the obvious cases of buildings with water damage, such as those found in New Orleans post-Katrina, many of which were condemned or torn down.It is because of these dangers that many international agencies are trying to achieve universal standardization of regulatory limits for mycotoxins.

Aspergillus

Currently, over 100 countries have regulations regarding mycotoxins in the feed industry, in which 13 mycotoxins or groups of mycotoxins are of concern. Additional legislature has been proposed to regulate mycotoxin levels in buildings, and in the 1990s, there were several multi-million dollar settlements related to toxic mold. Still, the public at large does not always recognize the danger and politics continue to preclude permanent, meaningful legislation.Join Dr. Staninger™ and her guest Dr. Dennis Hooper this week as they discuss mold and its inherent toxicity on One Cell One Light ™Radio!
