This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guest Dr. Zhong Lin (ZL) Wang, head of a leading group in nanoscience and nanotechnology at the Georgia Institute of Technology, to discuss the concepts of Nanoscale Triboelectric-Effect-Enabled Energy Conversion for Sustainably Powering Portable Electronics, about which Dr. Wang’s paper states:
“ Harvesting energy from our living environment is an effective approach for sustainable, maintenance-free, and green power source for wireless, portable, or implanted electronics.” AND his new Arrays of transistors made of nanowires which could form the basis of a new class of devices nearly as sensitive to mechanical force as human skin is, according to research published recently in Science.

In the summertime in Florida, there are three certainties: it will be humid, there will be a hurricane somewhere in the state, and there will be mosquitoes. Everywhere, mosquitos. While most prove harmless and leave you scratching your skin for a day or two, there are other dangers to mosquitoes as they can carry diseases such as West Nile and encephalitis. But as seemingly innocuous as most mosquitoes are, Florida is in danger of being consumed by something more sinister.
This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy welcomes returning guest Rosalind Peterson to discuss the Gallinipper mosquito. Approximately twenty times larger than a normal mosquito, the Gallinipper’s bite hurts and they have a taste for human blood – like a six-legged flying vampire.
Their name stems from the most likely apocryphal claim that if they nip you, they’ll get a gallon of your blood. While the image of a two inch long bug suddenly so swollen with blood that it weighs twelve pounds may seem humorous, these mosquitoes have been known to chase children and adults.
While the danger of the Gallinipper may seem real these descriptions, it is mostly harmless. Its bite hurts, but the bug only resides in low-lying areas prone to flooding – near a swamp or fields. These bugs also don’t carry human disease, so the only real concern is the animal’s painful bite should one land on you. However, due to its size, you will most likely notice it before it has a chance to bite.
The real danger, though, comes from the methods used to combat these flying
menaces. For years, local governments in Florida and other areas would spray toxic pesticides in neighborhoods to prevent mosquitoes and other bugs from becoming a nuisance and spreading disease – ironically causing damage to some people’s nervous and other bodily systems. The question becomes at what point are returns on pest control diminishing when it comes to human health and safety?

ROBERT THOLLANDER, Jr…… Presidential Silver Coin in Recognition of National Service
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy® pays tribute to a very special individual – her longtime colleague and friend, and previous guest on the show, Robert Thollander!
Dr. Hildy has known Mr. Robert “Bobby” Thollander since his early days in school. A graduate of Florida State University with a degree in Molecular Biology, Mr. Thollander was appointed to a Fellowship with The International Environmental Intelligence Agency (IEIA) right after graduation, where he became their first fellow in applied molecular biology for the identification of nanotechnology in various fields of science and the environment.
Mr. Thollander has always had a keen interest in biology, a passion that took him to Australia and New Zealand to study rainforests, followed by employment engineering sugar cane to make bio fuel. Although engaged in compelling research, he didn’t find it very challenging. Further, after seeing how his housemates – who were all teachers – had changed after working with kids, he knew he wanted to be a teacher and moved to Chicago to obtain his teacher certification through Northwestern University.
Recently, Mutual of America awarded Mr. Thollander with their Community Partnership Award, a Presidential Silver Coin in Recognition for National Service, recognizing his contributions and hard work within his community and his commitment to improving the lives of those around him. Rightfully so, we often honor the heroes that put themselves in harm’s way to protect us, though perhaps not as often as we should. Firefighters, police, and our nation’s armed forces among others all brave the various dangers of their occupations to ensure that we are able to be safe and well-protected from said dangers. However, unsung are the heroes who do not wear uniforms or do not get parades in their honor, but put themselves at risk to protect us against more common, yet less-seen dangers.
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy® focuses on these individuals, members of the National Registry of Environmental Professionals, or NREP, and will 
welcome Dr. Richard Young, the Executive Director of NREP to discuss the dangers that NREP members face, their long-term effects and a new method of protecting these individuals developed by Dr. Hildy® herself.
On a daily basis, NREP members are exposed to a myriad of toxic and harmful chemicals. These individuals may be exposed to hazardous materials and toxic substances in the field, their travels and perhaps even their home. And, though there are protective measures in place, the trained professional who uses respiratory protection and even the famous Tyvek ® suit may be at a greater risk, because they are exposed to large amounts of these toxins throughout their professional career. Additionally, many times the results of analytical tests from environmental sampling come to the professional as much as three weeks later after working on a site.

The pineal gland is a small endocrine gland in the vertebrate brain. It produces the serotonin derivative melatonin, a hormone that affects the modulation of wake/sleep patterns and seasonal functions. It is reddish-gray and about the size of a grain of rice in humans, and shaped like a pinecone, hence its name.
René Descartes, who dedicated much time to the study of the pineal gland, called it the “principal seat of the soul.” He believed that it was the point of connection between the intellect and the body. Descartes attached significance to the gland because he believed it to be the only section of the brain which existed as a single part, rather than one half of a pair. He argued that because a person can never have “more than one thought at a time,” external stimuli must be united within the brain before being considered by the soul, and he considered the pineal gland to be situated in “the most suitable possible place for this purpose,” located centrally in the brain and surrounded by branches of the carotid arteries.
Author Manly Palmer Hall, who founded the Philosophical Research Society, wrote a book years ago called the Pineal Gland: The Eye of the God(s) and described the earlier writings by adepts to its logical beginning of the endocrine system. Did you ever hear the song Nancy Sinatra sang “These boots are made for walking, and that’s just what they’ll do…” because none of us realized when we heard that song that our boots (shoes) would contain a self-charging battery that generated and stored energy as a renewable energy technology?
Renewable energy technologies generally consist of two distinct processes: energy generating (using sources such as coal, solar, wind, etc.) and energy storage (such as batteries).
Georgia Tech researcher Zhong Lin Wang holds the components of a new self-charging power cell that uses piezoelectric materials to directly convert mechanical energy to chemical energy. The chemical energy can be released as electricity.

These two processes are always accomplished through two separate units, with the first process converting the original form of energy to electricity, and the second process converting electricity to chemical energy. Now for the first time, research engineers, Xinyu Xue, Sihong Wang, Wenxi Guo, Yan Zhang, and Zhong Lin Wang from the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta, Georgia, have combined the energy generation and storage in a single unit as published in Nano Letters August 2012.
“This is a project that introduces a new approach in battery technology is a fundamentally new in science,” Zhong Lin Wang told Phys.org. “The self-charging power cell is made from nano piezoelectric material PVDF that replaces the conventional separator materials and acts as a nanogenerator inside a Li-ion battery.” Read the rest of this entry

Have You Been To Mosquito Lagoon Lately?
This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy™ welcomes returning guest, Rosalind Peterson, of California Sky Watch and the Agriculture Defense Coalition, to discuss two different, but none-less important topics.
In the first hour of the show, Dr. Hildy and Rosalind will discuss the United States Air Force’s involvement with mosquito pesticide spraying in Miami-Dade County in South Florida. Just two weeks ago, Air Force crews in C-130 cargo planes flew over the county during the final two daylight hours before sunset and up to 30 minutes after sunset. The planes sprayed out the pesticide Dibromo, sometimes flying as low as 150 feet from the ground. But Dibromo compounds are on the California list of chemicals known to cause cancer or reproductive toxicity.
GM Mosquito
Dibromo is the brand name of the insecticide Naled, in the organophosphate pesticide family that is commonly used to kill adult (flying) mosquitoes. It has been registered for use in the U.S. since 1959. AMVAC Chemical Corporation has been the major manufacturer of NALED since 1998. The No Spray Coalition and other organizations, such as the ones that Ms. Peterson belongs to, bring up the question: why is a branch of the armed services assisting in spraying a substance that is known to be toxic in one of the most heavily populated areas of the country?

Throughout history, new technology has brought a sense of wonderment and fear to those unfamiliar with it. In post-Civil War America, the steam-powered engine brought the possibility of speedier travel, but also the fear of cultural pollution brought about by this ease of movement. Currently, technology changes so rapidly that it often goes unnoticed – incremental improvements to products we already own don’t alert the deep-rooted fear of the unknown that we all share. But with a the practical application of a once-theoretical nanotechnology rapidly becoming reality, those fears are once more rearing their ugly head. But, are they warranted?
