~~SuperStorm Sandy~~

Just like Hurricane Katrina, the effects of SuperStorm Sandy will be felt for years. In addition to the millions of people left without power, the thousands of homes destroyed and untold billions in property damage, the New York/New Jersey area is forever changed.Sandy - 9 No matter the response from FEMA – much-

improved from Hurricane Katrina – and other agencies, the rebuilding and healing process will be a lengthy process, and those involved will need all of the help they can get.

This week on One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy®, welcomes in the first hour of the show Ben Colodzin, Ph.D., author of How To Survive Trauma, for a discussion about post traumatic stress disorder, the common difficulties people face in living through overwhelming experiences, and some very basic helpful things one can do to help cope with the extremely high stress of living in a disaster zone. (Dr. Colodzin has offered a response to questions you might have – for the next two weeks – Email him at:  kaatsi@frontiernet.net. Please give him time to work through the emails with his response.  We APPRECIATE this, Ben!)

Life In A ShelterMore than a month after the storm, there are still some in the New York City area with no power. City officials estimate at least 12,000 New Yorkers are trying to survive in unheated, flood-damaged homes, despite warnings that dropping temperatures could pose a health risk.

Elderly residents of public housing are struggling to get access to food, water and medications.Mid Atlantic Coast Prepares For Hurricane Sandy Yet, the chill is only one of the potential environmental hazards that experts say might endanger people trying to resume their lives in the vast New York and New Jersey disaster zone.

Environmental advocacy group watching rivers, water systems and the New York Harbor have described it as an “unprecedented” event, which brought pollution into the Hudson River and stirred it up. A cornucopia of toxic chemicals has washed into New York Harbor after a storm surge of petroleum products from waterlogged cars and boats and contaminants from Sandy - 5industrial, commercial and residential buildings, as well as subways, roads, parking lots and tunnels.

And once the waters recede, uncounted numbers of families have returned to coastal homes, apartment buildings, commercial buildings, cars, trucks, trains and even subways that are contaminated with mold, which can aggravate allergies and leave people perpetually wheezing. Come spring, the warm weather will allow for the mold and its toxic mycotoxins to bloom.

In the second hour of the show, Dr. Hildy®, welcomes Dr. Richard Young, the Executive Director of the National Registry of Environmental Professionals, to discuss the incredibly challenging tasks confronting environmental professionals in the face of disasters such as Sandy and the devastation of the environment and the lives of the victims of the wind and water.

==========

New York and New Jersey residents still face a number of challenges ahead besides loss of property. In addition to mold, carbon monoxide exposure, hypothermia, contaminated drinking water, spoiled food and environmental pollution pose risks to those living in the area. For instance, recent reports indicate that the nation’s fifth largest water treatment plant in Newark is still dumping some 240 million gallons of partially treated wastewater into the harbor every single day, which continues to create a very serious health hazard throughout the region. The effort to restore the area to habitable conditions, not to mention the thriving area it once was, will likely continue for years.

Join Dr. Hildy®, and her guests, Dr. Benjamin Colodzin and Dr. Richard Young, as they discuss the aftermath of SuperStorm Sandy on One Cell One Light Radio!
