At first glance, the labeling of an oil as “essential” might seem a bit misleading.  The most common usage of the word implies that these oils are a necessity. Though the term actually refers to the oil being a product of a plant, and capturing its essence, these oils are used in a number of therapeutic and pharmacological ways, thereby rendering them almost essential anyway. 

This week on One Cell, One Light Radio, Dr. Hildy™ welcomes guests Kathy Farmer, Shirley Chase and Diana H. Kajitori for a two hour discussion on essential oils and their health benefits. Founded by D. The first hour of the show will focus on the essentials of essential oils  (pun completely intended). The most common essential oils, such as lavender, peppermint, and eucalyptus, are distilled. Raw plant material, consisting of the flowers, leaves, wood, bark, roots, seeds, or peel, is put into a distillation apparatus over water. As the water is heated, the steam passes through the plant material, vaporizing the volatile compounds. The vapors flow through a coil, where they condense back to liquid, which is then collected in the receiving vessel. Most oils are distilled in a single process.

Oils from different plants have different benefits. For instance, the oil of carrot seeds has been used traditionally, for digestive complaints due to its tonic properties.  Oils can be applied and used in a number of ways, ranging from skin application as massage oils to diffused in the air by a nebulizer, heated over a candle flame, or burned as incense. Considered by some to be mankind’s first medicine, the techniques and methods first used to produce essential oils were first mentioned by Ibn al-Baitar (1188–1248), an Andalusian physician, pharmacist and chemist.

In the second hour of the show, the discussion will turn to an even earlier history of essential oils, as referenced in The Bible. For instance, incense is mentioned over a dozen times, in many different books of The Bible, as are odors, perfumes, scented oils and ointments. There are also specific references to essential oils and aromatic plants such as Camel’s Thorn and Cedarwood. In fact, one of the very first Christmas presents was an essential oil: Myrrh!
