It’s Back-to-School week for most and this week on One Cell One Light Radio, joined by Shoshanna, Dr. Hildy™ educates us on an often-overlooked indicator of our health – our fingernails! – before we switch classes and discuss how to avoid inflammation in the body using natural foods and means. The practice of studying fingernails as an indicator of health began over 3,000 years ago, as Chinese physicians studied their patients’ fingernails for telltale signs of illness. Thousands of years later, American country doctors, tending to their patients in small towns and farm villages, routinely checked patients’ eyes, the surface of the tongue, and the appearance of the fingernails. Some knowledgeable practitioners still check these things, although most that do are doctors that practice holistic medicine. Why did the ancients and the
(CLICK ABOVE IMAGE TO ENLARGE) old-time country doctors take such an interest in their patients’ fingernails? Because the nails often signal the presence of serious internal diseases, many that could become life threatening if overlooked or left untreated. Healthy nails indicate a body that’s likely to be healthy, too. If your nails are thin, discolored, easily broken, have thick ridges, or the skin around the nails is discolored or unnatural, further investigation is merited. No matter the race, normal nails should be pinkish and have a lighter pinkish-white area near their base. Nails that don’t appear like that are indicators that something is wrong internally and a trip to the doctor may be in order. The five most dangerous signs in your nails that there may be something wrong are clubbing, splitting, discoloration, thickening, and “spoon” nails. If your nails have one or more of these signs, it may be time to visit your physician OR alternative medicine practitioner.
In the second hour, Dr. Hildy™ will discuss avoiding inflammation. Our bodies use inflammation as a natural defense mechanism against environmental toxins and stress. Foods containing hydrogenated fats and sugars increase inflammation in the body, which leads to overactivity of the immune system. According to a 2004 study reported in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, trans fatty acid consumption increases inflammation, damages health and has a strong relationship to heart disease. The addition of anti-inflammatory foods to your diet, reduces inflammation, lowers your risk of heart disease, stroke and cancer and may provide benefits for conditions such as osteoporosis, age-related memory loss and macular degeneration. Some of the best foods for fighting inflammation are monounsaturated fats (avocados, almonds, hazelnuts, pecans, sesame seeds, olive oil), polyunsaturated fats (walnuts, flax seeds,

Join Dr. Hildy™ and Shoshanna this week as they discuss your fingernails and how they relate to your overall health, and fighting inflammation naturally, on One Cell One Light Radio!
