On the Wednesday, June 15, 2011 edition of One Cell One Light Radio, Dr. Hildegarde Staninger’s guest was personal trainer and Black Belt, Dwayne Arthur Jones, who sets himself apart from other gym owners from the git-go.

First of all, his little Big Gym in the oh-so-tony Hancock Park area of Los Angeles is a boutique gym with specialties like kickboxing, Tae Kwon Do and Pilates – all in 1,006 square feet.

“Fifteen years ago, in the dot com era, the boutique gyms cropped up. Then they all closed down. The niche was [sic. still] good when I opened a little later,” said Jones, who is 41 and has been a trainer since he was 26. He has had just one trainer in his own life. “I told him my objective…. I want to be a trainer to myself.” That came first before he began ministering to others.

This was a winning combination for Jones who was just interviewed by a major Network  Channel.  The little Big Gym is Jones’ 1st and only gym, so far. He has been in business for 10 years and is looking to expand.

Another unique aspect to the gym is the option to come and go as you like. Everyone has a key. “How can I set myself apart from everybody else?” he asks. “This is one of the many ways. It’s a more intimate gym with personal attention. In bigger gyms you just feel like a number. “

Jones, who also does nutrition counseling, covers it all.  “There  are three aspects to fitness,” he says, “cardio, nutrition, and weight training.  Sixty percent of my clientele are strength training, 30% want to maintain weight but lose fat, and 10% fall into the other category.  They want to get off meds, be flexible and improve their heart.”

Jones  has another special niche to his gym, with 60% of his clientele over the age of  65. “They can utilize most everything, and I can customize a slower pace plan to improve balance/coordination-endurance-build muscle, increase flexibility and  improve heart health. The little Big Gym objective is to help reduce or get clients off medications entirely by focusing on proper weight training and  nutrition and cardiovascular exercise. Small groups of 2 to 3, or 5 are an option. “I specialize and individualize people’s expectations,” he said.
