It was not many years ago that modern medicine appeared to be on the road to victory against infectious disease. Smallpox, polio and other diseases had working vaccines and other immunizations that would prevent their spread. However, depending on a certain point of view, Mother Earth will always find a way to control the delicate balance of her planet, as new, more complex diseases have emerged in the place of those that have been cured. Every year, new diseases are discovered and studied as patients emerge with symptoms that do not directly point to a known cause. But what if a disease isn’t a disease at all, but a psychological condition? Or what if it’s not a psychological condition, but its cause is something completely unnatural?

In 2008, federal health officials conducted a study of 115 “Morgellons” patients and concluded that, similarly to a Mayo Clinic study conducted at approximately the same time, there were no physical ailments from which these patients seemed to be suffering. Despite the unexplained sores and fibers sprouting from patients’ skins, this ailment was determined by the CDC to be of a psychological nature, though their own nomenclature refers to it as an “unexplained dermopathy.”
But is Morgellons truly unexplained? Or is the result something much more heinous and sinister? Evidence has shown that Morgellons patients often have displayed unusual markings in the whites of their eyes, a trait that seems impossible to be caused by something as physically benign as psychosis. And though the study found that cotton and nylon were the most common fibers that emerged from patients’ skin, the question remains as to why? And how conclusive is a study that only considered subjects from a 13-county area in Northern California? And if there really is more to Morgellons than what was concluded by the CDC, would dismissing the mental health of sufferers be a way to ensure that it has no real credence?

When considering the greatest inventions of the 20th century, most conversations will steer towards the microchip and television, but special consideration must be given to the laser. An amazing piece of technology, the laser has more applications than one could possibly name. Just as diamonds are forever, a laser is an optical device that creates a beam that continues in one direction until it is reflected off of another surface. Depending on the strength of the beam, its uses vary, from reading compact discs to bloodless surgeries and theoretically, as a weapon to knock the living daylights out of someone. But despite its global usage, to scientists, the world is not enough, and lasers are being used in new and interesting ways on a molecular level.

Now that we’ve reached the calendar year of 2012, much attention has been paid to the upcoming winter solstice in December as a signifier of a great change. Due mostly to the end of the long-cycle count of the Mayan calendar, December 21, 2012 has sent people into a frenzy of prediction and postulation in trying to determine why exactly the Mayans stopped their calendar on this date and what it means. While some believe that the Mayans saw the coming of the end of the world, many believe this is a false reading, as there is no historical evidence to support that this was the Mayans’ theory. What those who are perhaps less pessimistic believe is that 2012 will bring about a monumental change in our collective consciousness and that our perception of the world will never be the same again.
